Exeter's Woollen Cloth-Making Industry

Woollen cloth-making was Exeter’s most important export for many centuries.  On Thursday, 8 April 2021, Dr Todd Gray told us about a recently-discovered Exeter manuscript containing 2,475 swatches of Exeter cloth made in the 1760s.  For hundreds of years cloth making had been Exeter’s principal industry and the discovery of this sample book has been hailed by Prof. Catherine Rider, Associate Professor in Medieval Historyas `the discovery of a generation’.

In his talk Dr Todd Gray will discuss the work of twelve specialists who have examined various aspects of cloth making in Exeter.  The Exeter Cloth Dispatch Book 1763-5 is currently available for a short period at a launch price of £25 through stevensbooks.co.uk
